What is covered in the Harmonium course at Aalaap?
Harmonium training is closely tied to the Indian vocal tradition. The course covers:
- Introduction to the harmonium and its structure
- Correct use of both hands and bellows practice
- Recognising swar, saptak and individual notes
- Detailed alankar and palta practice
- Foundational and gradually deeper raag exposure
- Accompanying vocal music in real time
- Bhajan, ghazal, thumri and Hindi film pieces
- Stage presentation as soloist and accompanist
Are certificates provided?
Yes. Students of the Standard and Premium harmonium courses receive an academy certificate after 6 months of learning. The Basic course is a short 3-month foundation course and does not include a certificate.
How does one join the Harmonium course?
Harmonium enrolments stay open through the year. You may join either the Sigra or Lanka branch as per your convenience. Please schedule a visit time on 7565050505 before coming over.
Who teaches harmonium at the academy?
Harmonium training is conducted by experienced teachers under the mentorship of Dr. Anurag Mishra (PhD, BHU). The team is well-versed in both vocal and instrumental traditions.
From what age can a child begin harmonium lessons?
Children can begin harmonium from around 5 to 6 years of age. For younger learners, smaller harmoniums with fewer keys are used so the learning stays comfortable.
Can adults pick up harmonium at a later age?
Certainly — the harmonium is a beginner-friendly instrument that suits learners of any age. Several adult students between 40 and 65 are practising harmonium comfortably at Aalaap.
How much time does it take to learn harmonium well?
Progress depends on your practice. Most learners find their notes within 6 months, gain a strong grip by one year, and develop the ability to accompany singers over 2 to 3 years.
How many days a week are classes, and can I choose my batch timing?
All harmonium batches run 3 days a week, 60 minutes per class. You can choose any available morning, afternoon or evening slot at Sigra or Lanka, subject to seats. The full schedule is on our Timings page.
What is the fee structure and how do I pay?
The fee depends on the level you choose — Basic, Standard or Premium. You can pay month by month, or in advance for 3 or 6 months at a lower monthly rate (the 3-month Basic course is offered monthly or for 3 months). A one-time registration fee applies. Which career options arise from harmonium training?
Trained harmonium players can work as accompanists in bhajan-kirtan and concerts, stage performers, music teachers, studio session artists, or candidates for government scholarship programmes.
I want to become a professional harmonium player — is that supported?
Yes — Aalaap offers long-term professional preparation, including raag, advanced accompaniment technique, stage exposure and recording fundamentals.
Is personal mentorship available?
Yes. The Standard course includes one one-to-one mentor class every month, and the Premium course includes three. In Premium, missed classes are also carried forward to the next month.
Do students get access to the student portal?
Yes — every plan includes the Aalaap student portal for the period you have paid for: your course plan and lesson videos, daily quiz, riyaz tools, notations and your progress report.
Are online harmonium classes available?
Yes. You can learn through live online harmonium classes on video call, with the same syllabus and teachers. See Online Harmonium Classes.
Can I visit the academy before enrolling?
You are welcome to visit either branch and speak with our faculty before you enrol. Please call 7565050505 to book a convenient time.
Are bhajans and Bollywood pieces taught on harmonium?
Yes — alongside the classical core, students also practise bhajans, ghazals, thumri, hori, kajri and Hindi film numbers, exposing them to a wide variety of styles.
Do harmonium students get on-stage opportunities?
Yes — harmonium learners regularly participate as accompanists and soloists at the weekly Suno-Sunao stage, the annual Aarohi event and other local cultural programmes.
What stay options are available for outstation harmonium students?
Aalaap does not provide accommodation directly. Outstation students usually stay in PG facilities, rented rooms or private hostels close to our branches.
