Guru–Shishya Tradition

Rooted in the Banaras Gharana

A living tradition passed down from the masters of Varanasi’s own classical heritage.

Dr. Anurag Mishra, Director of Aalaap Music Academy, received formal training in the rich tradition of the Banaras Gharana under the guidance of Pandit Pashupati Nath Mishra, a renowned Hindustani Classical Vocalist. He was formally accepted as a disciple through the traditional Ganda Bandhan ceremony — a sacred Guru–Shishya initiation symbolizing dedication, trust, and the transmission of musical heritage.

This lineage is connected to the distinguished musical heritage of Banaras, represented by eminent artists such as Pandit Chhannulal Mishra and Pandit Birendra Nath Mishra.
