Two kinds turn up in every beginner's search, and the difference decides how your first fortnight feels. Here is the plain answer we give on the phone.
On a side flute you have to make the sound before the flute gives you a note, and for a complete beginner that first clear tone can take days. Plenty of people lose heart right there.
A straight flute removes that hurdle. The sound comes easily, you are playing short phrases within the first week, and the habit forms while the interest is still fresh. Think of it as a bridge — cross over to the side flute once you know you enjoy this.
If your aim is the traditional bansuri, start here and stay here. The first few weeks ask for more patience, but nothing has to be unlearnt later.
Begin with an A-scale — it is the shortest and the kindest to small hands and new breath. As your playing grows, add a G, then an F, then an E, and you will have the set a working player needs.
